iPads and Taylor Swift
I finally moved in with my host family this past weekend. All week I had been soo nervous (of course I wasn’t going to show it…lol). Anyways, after a very sleepless Saturday night, Sunday finally arrived. We started the day by going to the local markets and then had lunch at one of the restaurants in Mega City (the little curio shops have the cutest stuff!). After we returned to the house we were staying, we all waited patiently* to be picked up by our host moms.
When we got to my new home, I was greeted very warmly by the family and after all the introductions; I was surprised (and a bit relieved) at the similarities I noticed between my new family, and my family back home. My host brother was more interested in watching cartoons and playing with his friends, just like my younger brother! In the evening, I brought out my iPad and we played Temple Run which he really enjoys. Once he got the hang of it, it was “bye bye Rashida, and hello iPad!” Too familiar I thought. My little brother is the same, I am only as good to him as long as my iPad is charged. Before going to bed, my host brother, Junior, asked me what time I would be coming home. Finally, I thought to myself…he wants to hang out with me. Nope, turns out he was only asking because he wanted to call dibs on the iPad! My host sister Wendy is 13, and she loves Taylor Swift. In the last two days, I have probably listened to the songs “22” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” (the only Taylor Swift songs on my iTunes) more than 20 times! Again, too familiar. My niece is often the same way when she likes a song. I can already tell I’m going to feel right at home!
*i.e waiting an hour and a half to be picked up…in other words, 2pm actually meant 3:30 pm
